PVC Gypsum Ceiling Tiles: A Complete Buyer's Guide for Importers and Contractors

What Is a PVC Gypsum Ceiling Tile?

A PVC gypsum ceiling tile is a gypsum board core faced with a decorative PVC film on the visible side. The gypsum core is typically 7 mm to 12 mm thick, and the PVC film — usually 0.08 mm to 0.20 mm — is laminated under heat and pressure. The tile is then cut to size and edged for use in a suspended ceiling grid.

The gypsum core provides the body, weight and fire performance; the PVC film provides the finish, the washability and the moisture resistance on the face. Because the pattern is printed onto the film rather than painted or embossed, the same tile format can be produced in hundreds of designs — plain white, subtle stipple, wood grain, marble or geometric patterns — without changing tooling.

Standard sizes follow the international grid module: 595 x 595 mm and 603 x 603 mm for a 600 x 600 mm grid, and 595 x 1195 mm or 603 x 1213 mm for a 600 x 1200 mm grid. Tiles are normally packed 8 or 10 pieces per carton in the 600 x 600 mm format.

Why PVC Gypsum Tiles Are Popular in Commercial Projects

Three characteristics drive demand:

  • Cost. As a finished tile, PVC gypsum is generally the lowest-cost option among common suspended ceiling materials, which makes it attractive for large-area projects — offices, retail, schools and hospitals — where ceiling area runs into tens of thousands of square metres.
  • Speed of installation. Because the tile is pre-finished, no on-site painting, plastering or finishing trade is required. A standard T-grid installation can be completed quickly with semi-skilled labour.
  • Clean, uniform appearance. A printed film gives a consistent surface across an entire order, and a wipeable face that suits areas where dust and staining are a concern.

Key Specifications to Check on a Quotation

Most quality problems originate here. Ask your supplier to state each of the following explicitly:

Offices, retail, apartments, budget fit-outs
Offices, schools, auditoriums
Wet areas, exteriors, high-end interiors

PVC gypsum is rarely the right choice where acoustic performance is a design requirement — that is mineral fiber's job. Where the ceiling is primarily a clean, finished surface and budget is the deciding factor, PVC gypsum usually wins.

Typical Applications

  • Office and commercial interior fit-outs
  • Retail units and showrooms
  • Residential apartments and villas
  • Hotels and serviced apartments, excluding wet areas
  • Schools and clinics
  • Partition and ceiling refurbishment where an existing grid is being re-used

How to Evaluate a Supplier Before Ordering

  • Sample from production, not from the office. Ask for tiles cut from a production run, and check film adhesion, edge squareness and surface scratches.
  • Ask for certification. CE marking, ISO 9001 quality management and ASTM fire test reports are the baseline for most export markets.
  • Check packing details. Tiles are damaged in transit far more often than in production. Ask how many cartons per pallet, whether pallets are shrink-wrapped and corner-protected, and whether carton printing can carry your own brand for OEM orders.
  • Confirm container loading. Ask the supplier for a loading plan with carton counts and gross weight — this is the figure that determines your landed cost.
  • Discuss lead time and payment terms early. Peak-season congestion and film availability can both extend lead times.

A Note on Price

As a reference point, plain white and decorative PVC laminated gypsum ceiling tiles are currently listed by Chinese suppliers at roughly US$0.81–1.20 per square metre FOB, with minimum order quantities commonly starting around 4,200 square metres.

Actual pricing depends on core thickness, film grade, tile size, order volume and packing specification.

FAQ

Are PVC gypsum ceiling tiles waterproof?
The PVC film face is water-resistant and wipeable, but the gypsum core is not waterproof. For bathrooms, kitchens, laundry areas and semi-outdoor spaces, an aluminum ceiling or a moisture-resistant board system is the better specification.

What is the difference between PVC gypsum tiles and PVC panels?
PVC panels are hollow, extruded plastic profiles used for walls and ceilings. PVC gypsum tiles are rigid, flat tiles with a gypsum core, designed to lay into a T-grid.

Can PVC gypsum tiles be used in a fire-rated ceiling?
Yes, subject to the assembly. Fire performance depends on the tile and the grid system together, and requirements differ by market — ask for the relevant test report for your destination country before specifying.

Do they fit standard T-grids?
They are manufactured for standard 24 mm and 15 mm exposed grid systems. Confirm the edge detail when ordering, as a mismatched edge will not seat correctly.

What is the minimum order quantity?
It varies by design and factory, but for standard PVC gypsum tiles, minimum order quantities typically start at around one 20' container or a few thousand square metres.
